St. Peder’s Lutheran Church

Location: St Peder’s Lutheran Church, 4600 E. 42nd Street

The mid-century modern A-frame style became popular for first, homes and later, churches and commercial buildings, starting in the late 1930s. Its popularity for churches rose in the 1950s and ’60s, and with an added office and education wing that style was chosen for the third home of St. Peder’s, on land purchased from the University of Minnesota in 1961 when their second home on 35th Avenue was outgrown. The bell over the entrance was originally in a rural schoolhouse up north and was donated by a parishioner who owned a cabin near that school when it was torn down.
