Bloodroot

The River Gorge is a great place to see spring wildflowers like bloodroot. I found this patch along the trails leading to the 36th Street Oak Savanna. A native perennial, bloodroot is among the first plants to emerge in the woods each spring. As its name suggests, the sap is red, like blood, and the plant has a long history of medicinal uses.
